The project of the Croatian commissioner Branko Franceschi for the 61st Venice Biennale was presented at The Ministry of Culture and Media : “Compelled by Fear and Beauty”, artist Dubravka Lošić at Palazzo Zorzi (UNESCO headquarters).
9.5.-22.11.2026.
We wonder how this process of transforming fear through art is shown in Dubravka Lošić’s work? Because the artist Breda Beban rightly claimed that “art is not a safe haven”. Commissioner Branko Franceschi follows the statement for Dubravka Lošić’s artistic expression that it “(…) opens up a space for improvisation at the borders of performance disciplines(…).” This improvisation is also existentialist position.
In the book Christian Atheism, the philosopher Žižek sees the possibility of original materialization (and thus of a work of art) only after going through a critique (we specify) of secular Christianity. Žižek, however, does not question the Process that should actually be expressed in the ethereality of Christian awareness of Christ consciousness. Only in brave silence and without the “nausea” that tormented Sartre, in the zero expression of the event (according to Badiou’s Event as a performative Process), does the phenomenon of juxtaposition and then the melting of experienced fear and resolution in art take place. Fear as well as pain brings artistic vitality through colors and shapes.
Commissioner Branko Franceschi points out that Dubravka Lošić’s works adapt the space conceptually and contextually, clarifying and almost supporting Badiou’s existentialist thesis about the Event, as well as Žižek’s point of view about the original materialization:
“These processes are manifested in the works as surface tensions, material and color eruptions, and corrosive transformations in which matter itself becomes the subject.”
Although traumatized, the content of the work of the artist Lošić does not have the weight of “nausea”, but it fits well with the theme and title of the 61st Venice Biennale through a certain melancholy – In Minor Keys.
