“PhD. Biserka Cvjeticanin’s book “Culture in the age of networks” deals with the analysis of cultural policy (and cultural policies) as one of the most interesting and extremely important public policy of modern society and modern democracy. It turned out that all the companies that neglect this aspect of public policy sooner or later lose one of the key dimensions of development and through a crisis of identity as a recognizable element in today’s pluralistic world. Therefore, the topic of this work is scientifically and professionally relevant just as much as development of society itself.
The author always starts from the actual problems of cultural reality and cultural policy. Her views and opinions are not derived from the general principles and norms of culture and cultural politics but from real-life contemporary cultural processes. Even when starting from some general principles (for example of the general and universal principles of the United Nations, UNESCO or other international, both scientific and political bodies and organizations) she examines these principles in the light of their actual feasibility, their reception in concrete social environments. The author in her approach primarily has in mind how these principles are perceived, translated, implemented or not implemented.
This work analyzes the Croatian culture and cultural policy in the light of the fact that Croatia has become a full member of the European Union and that in its future cultural policy and strategy should incorporate three basic strategic direction of the EU: the promotion of cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue, the development of creative industries in the broadest sense and strengthening the role of culture in Croatian external relations.”
